What is this?

Fall 2008 034, originally uploaded by Mamaquita.

This bird looks like a robin.....but the speckles around the eyes aren't usually on robins, are they? I hope I don't embarass myself by asking what kind of bird this is. I would have thought that the robins have flown away to warmer weather. Please correct me if I am wrong. I love to photograph birds....but am not too familiar with the different kinds.

This bird surely loves those crab apples. It went from branch to branch eating away then it would fly off into the evergreens. And there just wasn't one bird, there were many. I'm stumped on this one. Help!!!!!

BJ, I say it is an immature robin, I can see the speckles on his neck too.

I think it is a robin also BJ. I saw some in our yard last week and thought the same thing as you. I would have thought they wouldn't be here this time of year. I haven't noticed the large migrating birds that fly in large flocks yet either. Our weather has been so strange these last few years, I wonder how it has affected the birds. Occasionally I will see robins where we live in the winter. I love birds, except when they poop on me. Ha!

We have robins all year round in Michigan. Last year, while caught without my camera, a whole posse of robins descended on a tree that I have with red fruit that stays all winter. There was fresh snow on the ground and these guys were everywhere. In about 2 hours, they stripped it bare.

Here is a picture from Audubon Society that matches your robin.

Obviously, that link didn't work and this one does. Go to the photo gallery for 2008. I think it's on page 7.

Thank you all for getting back to me so quickly! I started googling robins and was pretty sure after that that it was a robin. I really hadn't remembered seeing them this late in the season. Last year, on this same tree, a huge flock of black birds came in and cleared it bare of fruit. I mean, every last one of those crab apples were gone!

It's very cold here right now....high 20's last night and around 50 today. I'm not ready for this! Coats and gloves and all the non-sense! But here in Maryland, you can expect anything thing to happen.....it could be 70 in a couple of days! And snow the next. Go figure!

BJ,
We thought St Louis was famous for drastic changing weather. I never would have thought Maryland would have the same thing.

Definitely a Robin. They all have white markings around their eyes. What a wonderful shot!
